If you are looking to donate money to a charity, you likely will want to know that the charity really helps people or the environment, that most of the money you give actually goes toward the cause, and that they maintain transparency in their financial records.   1. Direct Relief works in 71 countries around the world to provide essential medical resources to those affected by poverty and emergencies. Direct Relief focuses on "maternal and child health, the prevention and treatment of disease, and emergency preparedness and response" and serve the world's most at-risk people. Recently they have been helping in Fiji with the devastation of Cyclone Winston, as well as tracking the Zika Virus across Africa, Asia, and the Americas.

  2. MAP International is a global Christian organization that partners with poverty-stricken people to develop healthier communities and save lives. They have a reputation for getting hundreds of millions of dollars of vital medicines into the hands of those who need them most. According to their site, every $1 given will provide $60 in medicines.

  3. Samaritan's Purse works in crisis areas of the world to bring food, medicine, and other assistance in the name of Jesus Christ. They help victims of poverty, war, natural disasters, disease, and famine. Some of their recent work includes motherhood education in Cambodia and distributing coats, warm blankets, and gift bags to children in Vietnam.

  4. Catholic Medical Mission Board works "to strengthen and support communities through healthcare programs and initiatives" and "the distribution of medicines and medical supplies," in communities suffering from poverty and unequal access to healthcare. Recent work includes programs for women and children in communities in Africa, Latin America, and the Caribbean.

  5. The Rotary Foundation of Rotary International works to promote world understanding, goodwill and peace. To do this they work to fight disease, provide clean water, save mothers and children, support education, and grow local economies. Recently The Rotary Foundation sponsored the Goodwill Games in outskirts of Hoi An, a resort town on the South China Sea.

  6. The Conservation Fund practices conservation of acreage around the United States and therefore serves the well-being of the communities using and surrounding these lands. They have protected over 400,000 acres of forest in 13 states.

UNICEF is in 190 countries and carries out a 5 year program that promotes the rights of women and children in those countries. From bringing food to European children after WWII to holding conventions to setting standards for the rights of children, UNICEF continues to serve the needs of the world's children.

  9. Natural Resources Defense Council "works to safeguard the earth--its people, its plants and animals, and the natural systems on which all life depends." Their priorities include curbing global warming, reviving the world's oceans, working with endangered species, protecting health by preventing pollution, and fostering sustainable communities.

  10. Doctors Without Borders, USA delivers emergency medical aid to the most needed locations in over 60 countries around the world. Helping those suffering from war, epidemics, malnutrition, and natural disasters, Doctors Without Borders does not have any political or religious affiliations, which can make it possible for them to reach all people who need help.
